The Waste Hierarchy Explained
The Waste Hierarchy is a government-recognised framework used to rank waste solutions by environmental impact. UK organisations have a legal responsibility to follow it under waste minimisation regulations.
The five levels are:
- Prevention — avoid creating waste entirely
- Reuse — extend product life through multiple uses
- Recycling — turn old material into something new
- Recovery — extract energy from waste
- Disposal — landfill or incineration only as a last resort
Reusable cups sit right at the top — delivering the most positive environmental impact by preventing waste before it happens.
